A Beautiful Day in November on the Banks of the Greatest of the Great Lakes
by Kate Benson
directed by Vanessa Stalling
Thank you for your interest in A Beautiful Day in November on the Banks of the Greatest of Great Lakes, by Kate Benson. This is an extremely unconventional play; a play that switches up the hierarchies we’ve grown accustomed to in theater. Ensemble-generated action & style ride parallel, and perhaps above, the playwright and director. As Kate notes in her stage directions, “Great Lakes allows the director and the ensemble and the designers great(er) latitude to imagine the specific motion of the performers and the particular architecture of the space, on purpose.” In many ways, this play will be less about what you say and more about what you do…until it’s about what you’re saying ☺. It is an ensemble-driven piece that recognizes it’s a play; a play that wants to use all of the fun tricks and surprises of theater in order to activate and engage the imagination of the audience (without the use of any props).
To me, the heart of this play is the idea that even in the face of competition, conflicting points of view, and the ultimate divider, death, ritual still has the power to gather us together. The urge to be together and gather is more powerful than what divides us.
